Remember the "Healthy Food Pyramid" from school, where they taught you all the food groups? In Australia we started teaching the pyramid diagram in the 1980's, and although it was revised several times, the last revamp was 15 years ago!!!
I have a food pyramid on my fridge, to explain to my kids the ratio of foods we should be eating in each category. Although it's been good to show them that sugar is a sometimes food, I've had to explain to them that the pyramid is slightly inaccurate according to my own food knowledge. I believe fruits and vegetables should be the main source of our daily food intake, not grains. I also question why sugar is even on there, and there is no distinction between good and bad fats! Anyway, it's lead to some great discussions - so that's always a good thing.
To my surprise, the Australian Nutrition Foundation, have just released a new food pyramid. They have swapped grains, with
fruit & veg, to be the bulk of our daily needs. They've also completely eliminated sugar from the pyramid, and replaced it with healthy fats. Even better, they've included herbs! spices! and water! Hallelujah!!! Today is a happy day : )
I know I'm weird, getting this excited over a food pyramid, but it's such a fantastic tool for teaching healthy food guidelines. It's really important that we get the most current and correct information to our kids while they're forming their opinions. If the food pyramid taught in schools has been misguided since the 1980's, and not revamped for 15 years, unfortunately results speak for themselves.... currently 65% of Australian adults are classified as overweight or obese, and out of those, about 25% are considered to be severely obese. Even worse...
1-in- 4 Australian children, are considered overweight or obese!
Those are sad statistics, but it's fantastic to see change towards a more healthy Australian way of life, for generations to come. Please print the pyramid and put it on your fridge, and let me know if it sparks some healthy conversations in your house.
This morning while eating breakfast I found myself thinking about the book I'm reading, and all the characters, and wondering what's going to happen next. Then I snapped out of my daze, and smiled to myself knowing that "reading a great book" really makes my soul sing. It's an escape, and I love it.
When ever I find myself in a bit of a rut, I always try to get back to the true essence of who I am, and ask myself "Am I doing the things that make my soul sing"?
I challenge you, to come up with 10 things that really make your soul sing? It can be as cherished as your children's laughter, or as simple as wearing your favourite fluffy slippers on Sunday morning.
One of mine is hanging in the hammock - Richard bought it for me when I was pregnant with our first daughter, and even now, when we go camping he hangs it up just for me.
Hiding inside it like a cocoon, makes my soul sing.... and I'm usually reading a book in there... that's a Double Whammy! Then if he brings me a glass of New Zealand Sauvignon blanc.... that's the Trifecta right there!!! Hammock, Book, Wine.... pure bliss.
Let me know what makes your soul sing.... hopefully it's singing often, and loud.
Lately I've been totally busy, working, studying, organising a house renovation, and the usual chaotic family stuff. Of course I was getting
run-down and my body said "NO MORE" by catching a really nasty cold.
On about day 2, my head was thumping, nose running, eyes watering... instead of working through it (like I normally would), I decided to stop and ask myself "how did you get so
Obviously my hectic life was the issue, but how could I possibly change this when everything needed to be done ASAP? So I asked myself what does "ASAP" mean to me??? and I got the answer, NOW! TODAY! URGENT!
It was all of a sudden clear to me, "ASAP"
does not mean NOW! TODAY! or URGENT! sometimes it means NEXT WEEK, NEXT MONTH or maybe even SORRY I CAN'T.
I created my hectic life, and today I have decided to change it.
Now "ASAP" means...As Soon As Possible (according to me and my wellbeing).
Hope you're all putting your health first : ) Leave me a comment, I'd love to hear from you.
